In the Greek parliament, it was not possible to elect a new president during the first round of voting today, on Saturday.
This became the result of the first of three voting rounds that must take place in case of failure to elect a president. At this stage, neither of the candidates received the required number of votes - 200 out of 300.
"We will continue to work to ensure the election of a new president, and I am confident that this will happen in the next voting rounds," said the Prime Minister of Greece after the voting.
It is necessary for a candidate to have the support of at least 200 members of parliament. If the votes do not take place in the remaining two rounds, extraordinary parliamentary elections will have to be called.
