Greece Rescues Migrants After Tragic Samos Incident

Yesterday, the Greek coast guard reported that the bodies of male and female migrants were found, who were considered lost after a boat capsized near the island of Samos in the Aegean Sea. An official representative of the coast guard noted that 22 more people were rescued from the same boat in good weather conditions, and the rescue operation has been completed.

According to the official, Greece became the main gateway for migrants in 2015 and 2016, when over a million people, mainly Syrian refugees, crossed from Turkey, traveling far to reach the island from flimsy boats. After this, the number of arrivals decreased, but last year it increased again as many migrants sought to pass through a new route south via the island of Lesbos.
